The annual kick-off to the holiday season is coming soon. No, not the yearly fall visit of the Coastal Carolina Fair. I am talking about the Charleston Area Model Railroad Club’s train show. What would the holidays be without toy trains?

Model Railroad and Train ShowAs in past years, the show will be held at the Danny Jones Armory and Gymnasium, 5000 Lackawanna Blvd, North Charleston, SC 29405. This year looks to be a much bigger and better show with two buildings of vendors and displays. (Can we all get a shout of approval for the return of the displays?)

The dates of the show are Saturday and Sunday, November 8 and 9, 2014.

For more information, check out the Charleston Area Model Railroad Club’s website. You can also email them if you are interested in being a vendor.

The Post & Courier is reporting that Angela Trotta Thomas will have a gallery showing of her paintings of Lionel toy This One Daddy - Boy Looking At Lionel Toy Train Catalogtrains at the Coco Vivo Gallery at 25 Broad Street on December 7th from 5pm to 8pm.  Thomas has become the only artist to be licensed by the toy train company and has been featured on several covers of its catalogs. Her painting on the 2000 cover was the first illustrated cover since 1969, when they switched to photographs.

Lionel also created an Angela Trotta Thomas Christmas boxcar collection 10 years ago that comes out every year and features her art.  “It just seemed like a natural progression. Ten years ago, I licensed them, and before they licensed me,” she said.

Lionel was founded in New York City in 1900 when the railroad business was booming and trains were a popular way to travel. Joshua Lionel Cowen was the company’s founder and the inventor of the toy trains.

Thomas said many of her paintings are not about the trains themselves, but about the emotional attachment to them. She said many of her paintings are about “capturing the romance of train travel” like in her painting, “Passing Train.”

The Post and Courier has a nice video up by lowcountry news veteran Warren Pepper about the attachment of toy Holiday Trainstrains to the Christmas holiday season. From an Ace Hardware store on Dorchester Road to Charleston Place Hotel downtown, people are drawn to the simple pleasures of watching a train go round for the holidays. Perhaps it is nostalgia or maybe the hidden desire for simple toys, but the model railroad for Christmas appeals to most everyone. Check out the video of the holiday trains at the Post and Courier by hitting the still shot or by going to http://bcove.me/7uny2olt.
